Group Intelligence is a science and public art experiment in which participants self assemble like molecules, mimicking how life begins. Group Intelligence is a collaboration between Out of Hand Theater, The Lunatics, Chemists David Lynn and Martha Grover, and the NSF/NASA Center for Chemical Evolution exploring one of the most intriguing questions of our time, “How did life begin?” Group Intelligence is available for touring to science museums, theaters and universities, and touring assistance is available from the National Science Foundation.

After a successful European Tour, we’re getting ready to tour the U.S. in 2012. Download your tracks. Meet us at the show location. We’ll all press play and go on an epic journey together. Science and Art collide in Group Intelligence.

Group Intelligence is based on a flash mob, and the audience takes part in Group Intelligence by following instructions delivered through MP3 players. The audience signs up for the performance online or on location, and can download an MP3 track onto a personal player, or pick one up at the event. On event day, the audience arrives at the event location, usually a green space in the city. At the designated time, they start their MP3s, a soundtrack of music, narration, and instructions that guide them through the experience. Along the way, each audience member is instructed to perform specific actions. Through these actions, the audience both creates and experiences images of the creation of the world and the emergence of life. While the audience follows the narration, their movements mimic the self-assembly patterns of molecules that created life. The event draws parallels between a mob of people and a pool of molecules: in both, individual behaviors of selfishness or cooperation create a collective intelligence, the very properties that allowed the molecules of early Earth to self assemble to form life. During this science and public art experience, participants walk, run, solve problems, laugh, and build something extraordinary together. How hard the audience works is up to each individual, but the diversity of the group is key, since diversity is necessary for molecules to survive and behave intelligently.

Register for the March 31st GAME here. Tickets are limited.

The GAME starts at the Horizon Theatre in Little Five Points. Please arrive in ONE team car. Or, if you must bring additional cars, park them on the street in L5P or Inman Park.

1083 Austin Avenue Northeast Atlanta, GA 30307
Atlanta’s own amazing race, The Game is an interactive puzzlehunt in which teams of players race each other around town following clues and deciphering codes. Your mission: find the clues, outsmart the competition and cross the finish line first. Remember, Game Control is watching you.

The Game follows a sequence of secret sites. Teams gather at the starting location, where they solve the first puzzle. The solution of the puzzle reveals the location of the next site. The first team to solve all of the puzzles wins. The puzzles are wildly diverse: players face cryptograms, graphic and multimedia ciphers, physical challenges, clues hidden in plain sight, and more. Leading The Game is Game Control, who shapes the players’ experience. Many clues are delivered by Game Controllers in disguise, so players never knows for sure who is part of The Game. By interacting with architecture, monuments, parks, historic sites, public art, businesses and services organizations, where they must gather hidden clues, players experience their city like never before, while creating a unique public art spectacle for thousands of passersby. Out of Hand Theater has produced The Game yearly since 2006 to enthusiastic, sold out crowds.

When does it start?: 12 noon. Exactly.

Where is it?: The GAME will take place within the perimeter of Atlanta. The GAME starts at Horizon Theatre in Little Five Points. 1083 Austin Avenue Northeast Atlanta, GA 30307. Please arrive in ONE team car. If you must bring additional cars, please don’t park them at the Horizon. They have performances all afternoon and need the parking lot to be clear.

How long does it last?: That really depends on how good you are. But know that everyone should have completed the GAME by Happy Hour.

Is it difficult?: Definitely. That’s the fun, right? But in a variety of ways, so put together a team with diverse skills.

We are very proud to announce that Group Intelligence will perform at the New Haven Festival of Arts and Ideas in June. This is a big deal, a big wonderful festival and the Group Intelligence experiment will be a great addition.

We are currently revamping the project with help from our scientist friends at the Center for Chemical Evolution. In April, the show will travel to Philadelphia and Cambridge in its new form. We are still putting together details for a few other potential locations as well, including a reprise in Atlanta.

About the play
Twentysomething Luke, who believes in God, is deeply in love with the slightly older Adam, who believes in everything but. When a tragic accident interrupts their perfect New York life, Adam must turn to Luke’s friends and deeply religious family for support – and answers. This runaway New York hit began off-Broadway in 2009 and transferred by popular demand to Broadway in 2010. The New York Times called Next Fall “smart, sensitive and utterly contemporary…the funniest heartbreaker in town.”

Greetings, Fellow Adventurers!

Are you ready to be part of a movement?!

Armed only with sidewalk chalk, your own vitality and a digital camera; in the company of strangers that are soon-to-be kindred spirits, you will temporarily and eloquently change the face of this city- and thereby the world.

Join us. The Guerilla Haiku Movement will take place in Atlanta on Saturday, October 29th at 2pm.

The plan is as follows: we meet in Little Five Points on the main square (corner of Moreland and Euclid) for the opening ceremony. Come dressed for urban adventure (in and out of doors so dress accordingly)

You will be randomly split into groups of 5-8. Bring friends, family, people you run into on the way over that are clearly full of joy. But recognize that it is essential that you want to play with others (unknown others). For such is the spirit of the event.

Each group will be given a scavenger hunt, a map of one neighborhood in their city, a bucket of sidewalk chalk and one person must have a digital camera. Together you will travel to your ‘hood. Once there, the magic begins. Inspired by the place and each other, you will create haiku to decorate that place. Engage as many passers-by as you wish (i am a big proponent of engaging passers-by). And then document your work with photos.

We will convene together as a large crew when we are finished (6:00pm-ish) at a local water hole for a final Haiku-off and general good cheer. I will upload photos from each group to the fledgling website and give each group an opportunity to comment on their awesomeness. And we will frolic. As is our nature.

See you there.
